“There were so many moments where I didn’t think it would happen again, but I just had to believe and keep chasing, and today was the best race I could have possibly had”.
The British Grand Prix was the greatest race of the season, and it was won by none other than Sir Lewis Hamilton. This instant modern classic will go down in history for many reasons, and you need to remember this moment with a print of Hamilton as he presents himself to his loyal subjects – as the “King of Great British GP” - having just won his home race for a record-breaking 9th time.
Lewis Hamilton jumped on the F1 scene 17 years ago, and immediately launched a challenge for the 2007 World Driver’s Championship, whilst fate prevented him from become the first ever rookie World Champion (except for, 1950 Champion, Farina) he still became the youngest Champion-ever the season following. Over the next few years Hamilton would amass 21 race wins with McLaren before jumping to Mercedes for 2013.
Hamilton and Mercedes would become the most iconic Team X Driver pairing in F1 history. From 2014-2021 the pair dominated our sport together – with Hamilton winning 6 WDC and Mercedes winning 8 WCC titles. This tenure together meant that Hamilton's win tally grew to 103 – but after so controversially losing out on the 2021 WDC title, Hamilton didn’t win another.
945 days since his last win, Lewis Hamilton overcame the raw pace of the McLarens, overcame the inevitability of Max Verstappen, the rain and difficult-to-predict weather, and overcame his own internal doubt. Against the odds, Lewis Hamilton won his home Grand Prix.
A win that means so much that the driver with 103 race wins, cried when he won his 104th. The raw emotional reaction from Hamilton as he did it again – in front of the very people that mean the world to him. Breaking the record for most race-wins at a single circuit in the process.
Sir Lewis Hamilton, with the Union Jack draped over his shoulders, stands upon his W15 and turns to the fans filling the stands. The deafening raw of celebration from the crowd as they unanimously approved Lewis Hamilton as the “King of Great British GP”.
